6 REASONS TO AVOID REFINED SUGARS

Sugar found naturally in foods is unavoidable and important to your diet but it’s the added, refined sugars of which you need to be wary!

What does refined sugar do to your body?
Sugars are carbohydrates found in foods, and there are a number of different types including glucose and fructose. Sugar found naturally in foods is unavoidable and important to your diet. However, you need to be wary of added and refined sugars.

Sugar causes inflammation
Inflammation is part of your body’s natural immune response, so it’s not always a bad thing. However, consuming too much sugar can cause inappropriate inflammation, which has been linked to aging and disease. Want to slow down the aging process? Simply cut down or cut out refined sugar from your diet.

The link between sugar and type-2 diabetes
Sugar is high in calories, and when it’s consumed in large quantities (and coupled with little or no exercise), the body converts it to fat, which leads to weight gain. Being overweight is directly linked to the development of type-2 diabetes.
Added to this, the large amounts of insulin your body has to secrete in order to control the spikes in blood sugar caused by sugary foods leads to the cells in your body becoming resistant to insulin. This in turn makes it difficult for you to control your blood sugar levels.

Sugar causes heart disease
A diet high in sugar can lead to a raised triglyceride level, which causes clogging of the arteries.

Sugar can increase your risk of cancer
A high sugar diet has been linked to an increased risk of cancer, particularly pancreatic cancer.

Sugar is addictive
No, really it is. When you eat sugar the brain releases dopamine – which gives us a feeling of pleasure. It’s this feeling that becomes addictive, as our brains are hard-wired to seek out pleasurable activities that release dopamine. Drugs such as cocaine work in the same way.
And finally, sugar really does cause havoc with your teeth, and it’s directly linked to tooth decay and cavities.

So what you can do
Now that you know how dangerous refined sugar is, try to limit your daily sugar intake to 25g (for women) and 35g (for men), or cut it out all together. Always check your food labels for added sugars (anything ending in “ose” is a sugar), and also try to steer clear of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) and fruit juice concentrate.

If you have a sweet tooth and just need to have some sugar, rather than reach for  chocolates or a packet of sour worms or jelly beans rather have one of Herbalife's Protein Bars.
